What Is Bahama Mama Tropical Smoothie?

Bahama Mama is one of the most popular smoothies in a chain cafe called Tropical Smoothie in the US.

They are best known for selling smoothies and smoothie bowls, but on their menu, you can also find sandwiches, quesadillas, and wraps.

Some other popular smoothies include Detox Island Green Smoothie, Kiwi Quencher, and Mango Magic.

    Ingredients & Substitutions

Gathered ingredients for making Bahama mama tropical smoothie with text overlay ingredients on each ingredients.
    • Frozen strawberries: Frozen fruit makes for the best smoothie - it's thick, creamy, and cold without the need for ice. But fresh strawberries can work in a pinch.
    • Frozen pineapple: You can use frozen mango instead.
    • White chocolate: This is the secret ingredient and what makes this recipe so good. If you've never tried blending chocolate into your smoothies before, you're in for a treat!
    • Coconut milk: I like to use coconut milk from a carton, but canned light coconut milk can also work. In general, you can use any type of milk you like.
    • Vanilla extract: A splash of vanilla goes a long way - it flavors the whole smoothie so don't skip it!

See the recipe card below for exact measurements.

    👩🏼‍🍳 Petra's Tips

    • Use a high-speed blender. You need a blender powerful enough to blend the chocolate and frozen fruits until completely smooth.
    • Start with less liquid and adjust. You can always add more liquid to reach your desired consistency.
    • Use your favorite chocolate. You can use any chocolate in this recipe including dark chocolate, milk chocolate, strawberry chocolate, etc.
    • To make it into a smoothie bowl, use a powerful blender and start with only a splash of milk. Try to be patient, stir often, and add as little liquid as possible.
    • To meal-prep this smoothie, add all ingredients except the milk and vanilla to individual ziplock bags and freeze. When you're ready to enjoy simply blend with your liquid of choice.

    FAQs

What is in Bahama Mama Tropical Smoothie?

The popular Bahama Mama smoothie is made from a blend of strawberries, pineapple, coconut milk, and white chocolate.

    Is this smoothie healthy?

While this smoothie does have white chocolate, which is high in sugar and fat, it also has antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, and manganese from the fruits. I would say it's a relatively healthy food when consumed in moderation.

Can I make this smoothie vegan?

Yes! Use either a vegan white chocolate or omit the chocolate entirely.

Why Is this called Bahama Mama?

The smoothie Bahama Mama is called after a tropical cocktail with the same name. The cocktail features coconut rum, pineapple juice, and grenadine syrup, which are all tropical flavors.

    Variations

    • Protein powder. If you want to make this smoothie more filling, feel free to add 1 scoop of protein powder. A vanilla one would be delicious here.
    • Yogurt. If you want to thicken the smoothie, you can use either plant-based yogurt or plain Greek yogurt.
    • Sweetener of choice: If you want to add more sweetness, add 1-2 tablespoon of maple syrup or agave syrup.
    • Other fruits: Blueberries, raspberries, passionfruit, and bananas will all be delicious here. Similarly to my avocado smoothie, you can also add ½ of a ripe avocado.
    • Greens: To sneak in veggies, add 1 cup of baby spinach, kale, swiss chard, or any of your favorite greens.
    • Seeds: Hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds are high in healthy fats and omega-3s and you won't even taste them. Hemp seeds are particularly high in protein, with 1 tablespoon having 6 grams of protein (as much as an egg).
    • Nut butter: I love to add a drizzle of peanut butter or almond butter.

    Serving Suggestions

Top with coconut flakes, more white chocolate, and my homemade air fryer granola. I also love adding chopped nuts like roasted pecans.

If you want to be extra, you can top it with whipped cream or coconut whipped cream.

    Storage & Freezing

    • Fridge: This Bahama Mama Tropical Smoothie is best served fresh, but if you have leftovers you can store them in a mason jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
    • Freezer: Freeze leftovers for 3 months. Let thaw before consuming.
