This Provolone Grilled Cheese with Honey tastes like a gourmet meal, but comes together in just 10 minutes! It's cheesy, stretchy, and has just enough sweetness to balance out the salty flavors!
There is nothing quite like a big bowl of my homemade Mediterranean tomato soup served with warm grilled cheese on the side. It's as comforting as food gets, am I right?
This Provolone Grilled Cheese is melty, gooey, and SO cheesy, and the addition of honey takes it to a whole new level!

Ingredients and Notes
- Cheese: Besides provolone, we also use mozzarella, but you can substitute it with gouda, Havarti, Аmerican cheddar, or any other that you like.
- Bread: We use sourdough, but feel free to use any bread you like.
- Butter: Use room temperature butter for easier spreading. If your butter is cold, you can slice it into squares and microwave it for 10 seconds on each side or until soft.
How to Make Provolone Grilled Cheese with Honey
Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Then, flip it with the buttered side down.
Add sliced provolone and mozzarella (or another cheese of choice), and close with another slice of bread, with the buttered side up.
Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat. Once hot, add the sandwiches to the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes, then flip.
Cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until both sides are golden and the cheese is inside melted.
Finally, remove from the heat and drizzle with honey on top. Serve right away!
Expert Tips
- Cook on medium-low or low heat. If you cook on high heat, your toast will burn before the cheese has had the time to melt.
- Cover with a lid if needed. If your cheese is not melting properly, cover with a lid for 1-2 minutes to trap the heat inside.
- Make sure your bread slices are not too thick. If the bread is too thick, the heat won't be able to get to the cheese as quickly. The ideal thickness of the bread is between ¾″ to 1″ (2cm to 2.5cm).
- Drizzle the honey right before serving. This grilled cheese tastes best when served fresh, mainly because the honey can make the bread soggy after a while.
FAQs
You need soft, crusty bread in order to make the best grilled cheese sandwich. We like to use sourdough, but you can use regular white bread, Pullman loaf, ciabatta, and even English muffins.
You can use either mayo or olive oil. Keep in mind that mayo will leave a mayo-like taste because it's not as neutral.
Yes! You'll need to pre-heat your air fryer to 375F, then add your sandwiches. Cook for 3 minutes on each side or until golden.
Yes! You can reheat it in the oven, air fryer, or on the stovetop. You can also do it in the microwave, but it's our least favorite because it makes the bread soggy and doesn't give you the crispy edges.
Serving Suggestions
This grilled cheese is delicious served next to a big bowl of soup like my alcohol-free French onion soup or this broccoli pea soup.
It can also be a great side dish next to a fresh salad like this arugula spinach salad.
