What's In The Detox Island Green Smoothie?
Here is an overview of all of the ingredients you'll need!
- Bananas: You'll need 1 ripe banana per serving. You know your banana is ripe enough when it has brown spots on the skin.
- Baby spinach: This gives this smoothie its lovely green color. Spinach is also high in iron, vitamin K, magnesium, calcium, and more!
- Frozen pineapple and mango: I like to use frozen fruits to make the smoothie colder and thicker, but you can also use fresh pineapple and mango.
- Coconut water: For blending all of the ingredients. You can also use plain water.
- Fresh ginger: Add more or less to taste, depending on how strong you want the flavor to be.
See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and exact measurements.
Substitutions
- Spinach: If you don't have baby spinach on hand, you can use the same amount of kale. Frozen spinach will also work.
- Coconut water: You can use filtered water, orange juice, or plant-based milk such as almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.
- Frozen fruits: In a pinch, you can use any frozen fruits you like here.
- Banana: To make this smoothie without bananas, you can use double the amount of frozen mango.

👩🏼🍳 Petra's Tips
- Use ripe fruits. Using ripe bananas, mango, and pineapple is essential for a creamy fruit smoothie! Not only that, but riper fruits are sweeter and taste better.
- Sweeten to taste. If the smoothie is not sweet enough for you, don't hesitate to add one date or a splash of maple syrup or honey. You can have a healthy smoothie that is also delicious!
- If you don't have frozen fruit, you can make this smoothie with fresh fruit and add ice cubes instead.
- Freeze the ingredients in an airtight container in advance. Stack your freezer ahead of time, so you will always be 5 minutes away from making this smoothie. You can even make individual portions by placing the ingredients in a jar or an airtight container, and then just blending them with coconut water or milk before serving.
Recipe FAQs
The regular Island Green smoothie is sweetened with Turbinado sugar, while the detox version uses only natural ingredients for sweetness.
The detox smoothie also has ginger, which is not present in the regular tropical island green smoothie.
While there is very little evidence that detox drinks remove toxins from your body (source), this smoothie is incredibly nutrient-dense. It provides essential vitamins and minerals like antioxidants, fiber, vitamins A and C, and folate, all supporting your best health.
No! This smoothie is naturally sweetened and does not have any refined sugars.
Not at all! The flavor comes mostly from the banana, frozen mango, and pineapple. The spinach adds color and nutrients, without impacting the taste.
Variations
- Protein powder. If you want to make this smoothie more filling, feel free to add 1 scoop of protein powder. Choose one that has a mild flavor and isn't too strong.
- Dates. When I want to add natural sweetness I love using dates. Adding 1-2 dates to a smoothie does wonders.
- Hemp seeds or chia seeds. They are packed with plant protein, as well as healthy fats. We love adding up to 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds.
- Yogurt. You can use either plant-based yogurt or plain Greek yogurt. For a plant-based version, we recommend you use either coconut yogurt for a tropical flavor or soy yogurt for more protein. Add up to ½ cup of yogurt.
- Rolled oats. They will thicken the smoothie and add dietary fiber, which will help you stay full for longer. We don't recommend using steel-cut oats.
- Lemon juice. A squeeze of lemon juice will bring tanginess and brightness to this smoothie.
- Lemon or lime zest. It will give a nice boost of flavor and tanginess. We recommend about ½ teaspoon of lemon/orange/lime zest.
Serving Suggestions
You can serve this as a part of your breakfast alongside flaxseed overnight oats, tomato shakshuka for one, or my banana oat pancakes.
You can also serve it as an afternoon snack or a pick-me-up between lunch and dinner.
Storage
This detox island green smoothie is best served when it's freshly made, but if you have leftovers you can store them in a mason jar in the fridge for 24 hours.
