SUMMARIZE & SAVE THIS RECIPE ON:
Today I'm finally sharing my copycat recipe for one of the most popular drinks at Tropical Smoothie Cafe - their Bahama Mama Smoothie! It's inspired by the Bahama Mama cocktail made with coconut rum, pineapple juice, and grenadine syrup, but this is a wholesome, alcohol-free version you can enjoy any day of the week.
And once you try it, you'll never go back to the cafe option! Not only can you customize it however you want, but it has half the sugar and about 320 calories compared to 520 in the original. Plus, it comes at a fraction of the $8 cafe price.

Why You Will Love This Recipe
- Tastes like the original. Enjoy that familiar strawberry, coconut, and white chocolate flavor without leaving your kitchen.
- A fraction of the calories. Around 320 calories vs. 500+ for the cafe version, with significantly less sugar.
- Easy to customize. Just like my avocado spinach smoothie, you can adjust the sweetness, skip or reduce the white chocolate, or tweak the consistency to your liking.
- Budget-friendly. Costs way less than grabbing one out, and you don't even have to change out of your comfy clothes.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Here's a look at the tropical smoothie ingredients you will need, along with some simple swaps you can make.

- Frozen strawberries: Frozen fruit makes for the best smoothie. It's thick, creamy, and cold without the need for ice, which can water down your smoothie. Fresh strawberries can work in a pinch, but you will likely want to add ice when blending.
- Frozen pineapple: Added for sweetness, but you can use frozen mango instead.
- White chocolate: This is the secret ingredient and what makes this recipe so good. Tropical Smoothie Cafe uses white chocolate powder, which isn't easily accessible to everyone. I've swapped it for a white chocolate bar, which melts more smoothly and is of better quality. If you want to make it vegan, use a dairy-free white chocolate.
- Coconut milk: I like to use carton-style coconut milk because it's lower in fat and blends into a smooth, drinkable texture. If you use light canned coconut milk, the result is a bit richer and thicker. You can also swap in any milk you prefer, depending on the consistency you're after. Soy milk is great if you're looking to boost the protein (about 3g per serving). Avoid flavored and sweetened milk, as it may interfere with the flavor.
See the recipe card below for exact measurements.
Variations
- Protein boost. If you want to make this smoothie more filling, feel free to add 1 scoop of protein powder. I recommend plain or vanilla. You can also add some plain Greek yogurt.
- Adjust the sweetness: You can add more white chocolate for a richer and sweeter flavor. Or feel free to use 1-2 tablespoons of honey, sugar, maple syrup, or agave syrup. To make it less sweet, cut the white chocolate in half or leave it out completely, but some flavor will be lost.
- Seeds: Hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds are high in healthy fats (omega-3s). Hemp seeds are particularly high in protein, with 2 tablespoons providing 6 grams of protein (as much as an egg). These blend right into the smoothie, and you won't even taste them.
- Swap the Liquid: You can also use pineapple juice, coconut water, or any other liquid you prefer. The results will be less creamy, and the flavor may be a bit different as well.
- Turn it into a smoothie bowl: Add the ingredients, starting with only a splash of milk, to a powerful blender. Blend, stopping to scrape down the sides and stir. Be patient as it may take a bit longer to blend, and add as little liquid as possible.
- Boozy version: For a cocktail-style version, add a splash of coconut rum to the blender when blending.
How To Make a Bahama Mama Tropical Smoothie

Step 1: Add coconut milk, frozen strawberries, frozen pineapple, white chocolate, and vanilla extract to the blender.

Step 2: Blend on high for 1-2 minutes, or until completely smooth and creamy and no chunks of chocolate remain.
Consistency: This smoothie is thick, but pourable. If you prefer a thinner consistency, you can add more liquid, and for a thicker consistency, use a bit less liquid to start.

Step 3: Pour the smoothie into a glass or a mason jar and enjoy right away!
👩🏼🍳 Petra's Tips
- Use a high-speed blender. You need a blender powerful enough to blend the chocolate and frozen fruits until completely smooth.
- Using a regular blender? If you don't have a high-speed blender, you can melt the chocolate in the microwave in 10-second intervals, stirring between each one until it's melted.
- Making it with fresh fruit? The smoothie will turn out thinner, so you will want to add about ½ cup of ice to chill and thicken the smoothie.
- Meal prep this smoothie. Add all ingredients except the milk and vanilla to individual ziplock bags and freeze. When you're ready to enjoy, add the contents of the bag to your blender, add your liquid, and blend.
- Storing: This smoothie is best served fresh, but if you have leftovers, you can store them in the fridge for up to 24 hours. To freeze, transfer the smoothie to a container or ice cube tray to make it easier to reblend. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Bahama Mama Tropical Smoothie Recipe FAQs
The popular Bahama Mama smoothie is made from a blend of strawberries, pineapple, coconut milk, and white chocolate. The restaurant version is also usually sweetened with turbinado sugar, but I found you don't really need it as the white chocolate provides plenty of sweetness.
While this smoothie does have white chocolate, which is high in sugar and fat, the fruit provides antioxidants, fiber, and other essential nutrients. It's also lower in calories (320 vs 520) than the original.
The most likely cause is that the chocolate didn't fully blend. For best results, melt it in the microwave first before adding it to the blender. Alternatively, you can blend the chocolate with just the milk at the beginning, then add the frozen fruit afterward.
Yes, you can skip the white chocolate and still get a creamy, satisfying result. For a similar texture, blend in ½ a banana or about 1 tablespoon of coconut cream. Just know the flavor will be less dessert-like without it. You can also swap the white chocolate for other options like dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or even strawberry chocolate to change up the flavor while keeping that rich, smooth finish.
Yes, absolutely! The only swap you need to make is to use vegan white chocolate.

Serving Suggestions
Finish off your copycat tropical smoothie with coconut flakes, shaved or chopped white chocolate, and some granola cooked in the air fryer. I also love adding chopped nuts like air-fried pecans. For an indulgent finish, top it with some whipped cream.
Pair this with some breakfast tomato shakshuka for a weekend brunch or an eggless lemon blueberry muffin for an easy on-the-go breakfast.

Bahama Mama Tropical Smoothie (Copycat Recipe)
Equipment
Ingredients
- 8 ounces frozen strawberries
- 8 ounces frozen pineapple
- 2 cups unsweetened coconut milk from a carton, not a can
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 ounces white chocolate you can use vegan if needed

- Blend on high for 1-2 minutes, or until completely smooth and creamy and no chunks of chocolate remain.

Notes
- Blending. A powerful blender ensures the chocolate and frozen fruit blend is completely smooth. If you don't have a high-speed blender, melt the chocolate in 10-second intervals in the microwave, stirring between each, before adding it to the blender.
- Adjust the consistency. For a thinner smoothie, add more liquid. For a thicker, spoonable texture, start with less and blend.

- Meal prep option. Freeze all ingredients (except milk and vanilla) in individual bags. When ready, add to the blender with the liquid and blend.
- Storing leftovers. Smoothies are best enjoyed fresh, but you can refrigerate them for up to 24 hours. For longer storage, freeze in a container or ice cube tray and reblend when ready (up to 3 months).
