Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Quick and easy to make. Making chips in the air fryer takes way less time than making them in the oven. Just 5 minutes, as opposed to 15 minutes.
- Versatile and customizable. You can use your favorite seasoning and flavor them however you like. I've included some more variations below.
- Crispy and delicious. Air fryer pita chips taste just as good as potato chips, and come out SO crunchy!
Ingredients and Notes
- Pita bread. There are different varieties of pita bread. I use Lebanese-style pita bread, not store-bought pita pockets. If you have leftover homemade flour tortillas or even Greek flatbread, those would work as well.
- Olive oil. Or any neutral oil such as canola oil, sunflower oil, etc. You can also use a cooking spray if you're looking to use less fat, but in this case, you'll need to sprinkle the spices on top.
- Spices. We went with smoked paprika, cumin powder, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper. You can leave it plain, but I think spices add a ton of flavor.

How to Make Air Fryer Pita Chips
1. In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and oil and mix until it forms a paste.
Hint: I like my chips well-seasoned, but if you like them lightly seasoned feel free to add only half of the spices.
2. Using a pastry brush, brush the mixture all over the pita, making sure to cover the edges as well. This ensures perfectly seasoned wedges!
3. Then, using a pizza cutter or kitchen scissors, cut the round pita into pita triangles or another shape of choice.
4. After that, preheat the air fryer to 350F.
5. Add ⅓ of the batch and air fry pita chips for 5-6 minutes. Depending on how fresh and/or thick your pita is, you may need to cook for further 2-3 minutes, until golden brown.
6. Make sure to stop halfway through and shake the basket.
Finally, let cool completely and serve with your favorite dip!
Expert Tips
- Shake the basket halfway through. This ensures even browning and the crispiest results.
- Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you would want to add ⅓ of the batch at a time and not overcrowd.
- Adjust the cooking time as needed. If your pita is on the thicker side, you'll need to cook it for longer. Not to mention every air fryer is different, so make sure to check the chips towards the end.
- No need to add parchment paper to the air fryer basket!
- Let cool completely before serving. They'll continue to crisp up as they cool.
- Don't transfer them to a container while they're still warm, or they will become soggy!
FAQs
This homemade chips recipe uses far less oil and sugar compared to regular potato chips. It can also be made with whole wheat bread, which adds fiber.
I don't recommend omitting the oil, as it helps the spices stick to the bread. Without it, you may end up with bland chips.
Let cool completely then store in an airtight container. Best served in the first 1-2 days, but they can last for up to a week at room temperature.
If you have frozen pita, you'll need to thaw it first. To do that, take it out of the freezer and leave it on your kitchen counter for a few hours until it fully defrosts.
Seasoning Variations
The best part about this recipe is that you can customize it with your favorite spices. Here are some combinations you can try!
- Za'atar: mix 1 tablespoon with 2 tablespoon oil.
- Cajun spice: mix 1-2 teaspoon with 2 tablespoon oil.
- Curry powder: mix 2 teaspoon with 2 tablespoon oil.
